Adversity doesn't define you, how you respond does. I've learned that when you're willing to commit fully to something meaningful, the possibilities become
limitless. My path hasn't been traditional, but that's exactly what makes it work.
I had a good life in corporate America, nearly 15 years in engineering and sales management, rising quickly at a company I respected. The work honed my critical thinking skills and taught me how to manage complex projects: breaking down milestones, anticipating obstacles, and ensuring every piece came together on time. I was comfortable, secure, and successful by most measures.
Then I had my own real estate transaction go sideways. Walking away, I kept thinking this could be done better. After two weeks of study, I got licensed in 2021 and started helping friends and family on the side. It wasn’t impulsive; it was calculated. I had the temperament, time, resources, and hunger to guide people through one of the biggest decisions of their lives. It demanded dedication and strict time management, a lot of lost weekends, but the gratitude from clients and seeing this new career take shape made it clear I was onto something. I also started questioning whether the success I’d helped my employers achieve could be channeled into building something of my own. The idea of starting a new chapter, and excelling again, took hold.

By 2023, I was ready to leap. I left the security of corporate life and went all in on real estate. Much like my corporate days, I hit the ground running. The dual-career life was over, and I haven’t looked back.
A lot of what drives me traces back to my grandmother, Arvella. Growing up in a small town in East Texas, she primarily raised me and nurtured my curiosity. She was one of the smartest people I’ve known, building a life on grit, wisdom, and unshakable principles. She taught me to do the right thing even when no one’s watching, to stand up for myself, and to never let anyone define my limits. When teachers labeled me disruptive for finishing work too fast, she showed up and demanded they give me more to do. That foundation gave me the confidence to aim high and the curiosity to keep pushing forward.
That curiosity led me to chemical engineering at Northwestern University, a school I didn’t know much about and a major that promised the perfect blend of disciplines I loved. As a first-generation college student, I navigated systems I hadn’t been prepared for, but I adapted. I realized that resilience, resourcefulness, and the ability to connect across different worlds were just as valuable as any technical skill.
Those problem-solving skills, seeded in school and crystallized in corporate America, became the foundation for everything that followed. Nearly 15 years in engineering and sales taught me to manage complexity, deliver results under pressure, and build lasting relationships. That rigor, paired with Arvella’s values and my corporate lessons, is exactly what I bring to every client at Blackstone & Birch Partners.

My engineering background translates perfectly to real estate. I break transactions into manageable steps, solve problems methodically, and keep the process clear for clients. But this work has never been about closing deals for me, it’s about impact. I’ve worked with first-time buyers who thought homeownership was impossible, families building generational wealth, and clients from underrepresented communities finally feeling seen in a process that often overlooks them. For me, this work is about opening doors and creating access.
That same drive carries into my community involvement. I serve on nonprofit boards, partner with housing organizations to improve placement processes, and stay active in my neighborhood. Chicago has given me so much, and I want my work to strengthen communities and expand opportunities beyond my own business.
Leaving corporate America for real estate full-time has been one of my proudest moves. Since making that leap, I've helped lead a high-performing team and launched Blackstone & Birch Partners at Compass Real Estate. Through my own transactions and overseeing many others, I've been exposed to nearly every scenario real estate can present—giving me a depth of experience that benefits every client I serve.
What sets me apart is how I combine nearly 15 years of engineering and project management discipline with genuine connection. I break complex processes into clear decisions, anticipate challenges before they surface, and advocate relentlessly to keep deals moving forward. Clients know they can reach me, get straight answers, and feel supported from our first conversation through closing and beyond.
For me, success isn't just about transactions, it's about delivering results while ensuring every client feels informed, confident, and taken care of at every stage. That's the standard I bring to every deal and the ongoing support my clients can count on long after we close.
Sincerely,

DeMarcus Hunter
